Shaking And Catheters – 8 Things That Happen During Labor And Delivery That Catch Women Off-Guard
Giving birth is an incredible experience, but it can also be full of surprises. While there are many things that people expect to happen during labor and delivery, there are also some things that catch them off guard.
Shaking

“Nobody told me that I’d shake like crazy. My jaw was literally chattering. Even when I commented on how bad it was, none of the nurses chimed in to tell me that was normal.”
Leaving with the Baby

Another person shared that they were surprised by how quickly they were allowed to leave the hospital with their baby. “They just let you leave with the baby after!”
Catheter

One person had an epidural but didn’t realize that a catheter would be part of the process. “The nurse was draining my bladder forever. She fully filled 3 basins and each time she thought I was almost done but it kept coming.”
Anticlimactic Pushing

Another person was surprised by how anticlimactic pushing was. “It was more like, we checked your cervix and when the doctor gets back from break we are going to start pushing.”
Heartburn

One person was surprised by how distracting heartburn was during pushing. “At the end of every push it felt like I would just vomit acid fire. I didn’t expect to be so focused on heart burn while pushing a baby out.”
Taking Care of the Baby

“The baby. Seriously. I sent him to the nursery so I could sleep, and for some reason it didn’t occur to me that I would have to feed him, put his clothes on him, and change his diapers. And, I could go get him anytime I wanted!”
Empty Feeling

One person was surprised by the empty feeling they experienced after giving birth. “The empty feeling right after, especially after the placenta is out too. Like duh, nothing is in there anymore, but woah! It’s so EMPTY. Like you feel empty from the inside (not in a bad way, actually kinda relieving).”
Sweating

Another person was surprised by how much they were sweating during labor. “Literally in between contractions I was asking my husband to dig through my bag for my deodorant.”
