“You Want His Nasty Germs?” Mother Blatantly Discriminates Against Children With Disabilities
As a parent, attending a child’s birthday party should be a fun and enjoyable experience. However, for one mother, a recent birthday party was marred by discrimination and cruelty. She recently shared her experience, detailing the behavior of a fellow party attendee who was unnecessarily mean to her and her children, who are both autistic.
New To The Neighborhood

The woman, who we’ll call ‘Marie’ began her story by saying her family is relatively new to the neighborhood. “I recently met a mom down the street and we’ve been casual friends texting here and there. She invited us to her son’s birthday party today. It was at an indoor playground. Both of my kids, who are five and three years old are autistic, which she knows and has been extremely understanding about.” My kids love to play, so I wasn’t all that nervous about bringing them. There were more people at the party than I was expecting, but my kids were truly having a blast playing.
Unnecessary Meanness

Marie describes the behavior of another party attendee as unnecessarily mean. The woman in question rolled her eyes and made derogatory comments about the mother’s children, who were simply enjoying themselves at the party. “The mom scoffed and grabbed her kid and dragged him away, rolling her eyes at me,” Marie said.
Her Son Is Just Having Fun

Marie also said that her other son likes to shriek when he’s having fun, to which the mean mom responded by yanking her son out of the pit. “The mom said ‘don’t talk to that kid, he’s too loud’ and again rolled her eyes at me.”
Getting A Drink

“Marie recalled another incident during the party when her son wanted a drink. “I was standing holding my three year old who was getting tired and a little cranky. He said he wanted some water so I took him to the water fountain to drink. This woman’s kid was behind us wanting a drink too, but the mother swooped in again and grabbed him and said ‘don’t drink after that kid. You want his nasty germs?'”
Stayed For The Kids

Marie stuck it out and stayed at the party because her children were having fun. “My boys continued to enjoy themselves unaware of this rude woman who for some reason hated my kids. So I’m glad I stayed for them. But now I am sitting here at home truly sad about how kids with disabilities are still openly discriminated against for no reason.”
Others Weigh In

Other people shared the woman’s disappointment at the woman’s attitude. One person said, “After the event, let your hostess know what happened and why you left. Make sure she knows it was not the norm, just one ableist Mom that had negatively affected the lovely inclusive environment she had provided. She has a right to know and address it.”
