A woman becomes anxious about flying with a baby after reading comments on online forums.
Anxiety Over Flying
The original poster (OP) took to Reddit to express her newfound anxiety about her upcoming flight with a baby for fear that people might judge her. OP said, “I read that some people think bringing babies on a plane is ‘abuse’ when they can’t handle the air pressure and germs. That the whole reason babies are on planes is because the mother is selfish.”
Moving Across The Country
OP explained that she is flying with her baby because she is moving across the country and it is preferable to driving for 20 hours with a baby. “It really opened my eyes to what some child-free people believe and now I’m worried that most people think that way. It’s simple to say ‘who cares about what they think’ but boy it just makes me wanna crawl into a hole.”
Words Of Reassurance
However, many people came to her rescue and reassured her that she will be ok. One person shared her experience and said, “I’ve only had good experiences on airplanes with my babies. Folks seem to over compensate their kindness knowing that others can be unkind. Last week we took my youngest on his first ever plane ride. He’s two. He screamed from the moment we put him in his seat. The man in the row with us was so sweet! He saw me trying to distract my kid with photos on my phone and started asking him questions like “is that you? Is that your nose in the photo? Where is your nose?” My kid was calm by the time we reached cruising altitude and quickly fell asleep.”
Need For Noise-Cancelling Headphones
Another shared OP’s fears. She said, “My brother-in-law pointed out that it’s 2023, if people don’t own noise canceling headphones that’s on them – and honestly, it did make me feel better. But seriously, babies are allowed to exist in public spaces. You paid to be on that flight. Would it be nice to fly with a calm and peaceful baby? For sure. But if baby is upset, that’s okay too. Everyone else will deal with it. If they want to ruin their own personal trips with bitter, rude, and unhappy attitudes about it – let them!”
Not All Child-Free People Are Rude
Someone else said that child-free people are not all rude. They said, “most normal people are neutral-to-positive about babies and children. I’ve been on planes with a baby screaming in the row behind me literally the whole time. It was utterly miserable for all of us, baby included, but at no point was I thinking “what a bad mom.” It was clearly beyond her control!”
