Should True Christians Celebrate Halloween?

As Halloween approaches, you might be gearing up to decorate your home with spider webs and bat cutouts. However, for true Christians, should Halloween be celebrated?

Halloween has pagan roots

The holiday originated in ancient Ireland as a feast to celebrate the end of the year, during which the Celts believed the wall between the living and the dead opened. The Catholic Church later tried to adapt the pagan customs to All Soul’s Day, which became Halloween.

Christians don’t celebrate Halloween

While the Bible doesn’t specifically mention Halloween, the verses in Job 7:9-10 NKJV does provide guidance regarding traditions rooted in beliefs of the dead rising from their graves and returning to their homes, and specifically says those who have died no longer rise from their graves.

Celebrating For Tradition

In terms of celebrating for tradition’s sake, I Timothy 4:7 NKJV and Ephesians 4:27 GNT talks about how Christians should strive for godliness and avoid falling for worldly vices.

Halloween has shifted over the years

Today, Halloween is often associated with superhero costumes and candy, rather than praying for the deceased or leading ghosts away. However, it still has pagan roots and supports beliefs not found in the Bible.

There are many ways to prepare your child for Halloween season:

  • Explain the holiday’s origins and what it means to people today
  • Ask teachers to excuse your children from Halloween activities
  • Practice role-playing to prepare for situations when they might be put on the spot
  • Pray together for understanding and a brave heart to stand their ground.

Make your decision based on what the Bible says

Ultimately, as a Christian parent, it’s up to you to decide whether or not to celebrate Halloween. Make your decision based on what the Bible says about celebrating things like Halloween, and equip your children with knowledge and God’s words to make informed decisions as they grow in spiritual maturity.
