I know I don’t have to tell you twice about the importance of taking your prenatal vitamins throughout the duration of your pregnancy. According to Mayo Clinic, one of the reasons why prenatal vitamins are so important is that your body needs more folic acid as well as iron in order to support the development of your baby.

Maternity Leggings

Maternity leggings are a great choice for the mama who doesn’t like to wear maternity dresses or skirts. They’re comfortable and aren’t as restrictive as jeans. And who wants to wear restrictive pants during pregnancy anyway?

As you get further along in your pregnancy, you will quickly realize that a lot of your clothing do not fit anymore. Yes, even the oversized dress shirt you love to style with those skirts. The truth is, you really will need a few new items in your closet to feel comfortable during your pregnancy This is true especially if you are still commuting to work day-in and day-out. Here are a few maternity tops that we are loving right now:

Maternity Dress

Even if you’re not a dress person, I urge you to purchase at least one maternity dress that you can use for your materinty photoshoot, baby shower or gender reveal. There are so many styles you can choose from, but we tend to gravitate towards the body-hugging maternity dresses that really show off your baby bump!

Nursing Bra

Nursing bras are so great to wear even during pregnancy. Like it or not, your breasts will most likely start increasing in size sooner rather than later to prepare for breastfeeding. To top it off, nursing bras can sometimes be on the pricey side! If you’re price-conscious like me, you’re probably wondering if you can forgo this one since you won’t really be using it anymore after pregnancy.

If this is what you were thinking, I suggest purchasing your nursing bra during pregnancy so you can get more mileage from them. All of that to say, that if you don’t already own a good pair of nursing bra, go ahead and purchase a few that will see you through to your breastfeeding stage. We’ve written a post here that lists out the best supportive nursing bras that you can purchase during pregnancy.

Maternity Underwear

A good maternity underwear can make you feel so good during pregnancy! Whereas underwear that don’t really fit all that well can just make you straight up miserable. I go into a lot of detail as to the 5 different types of maternity underwear you will need in this post. But to summarize, a good pair will cater to your needs at the time of your pregnancy.

The most common types of maternity underwear you might need are: over the belly and shape wear for added support, cotton underwear for ultimate breathability and comfort, and under the belly for those nights when you are just feeling hot all over. Check out our post on maternity underwear for more details.

When you’re at the beginning of your pregnancy, it might be a bit difficult to imagine how a pregnancy pillow will help. You may even find that your husband will love the pregnancy pillow more than you do, as mine did! But over time as your belly grows, you will come to appreciate the support and comfort that a really good pregnancy pillow brings.

Body Moisturizer/Oil

As your body and your belly continue to grow, I’m sure the thought of stretch marks have crossed your mind. In order to prevent stretch marks from appearing, make sure you continue to moisturize your body day and night, making sure you give close attention to your growing belly. My favourite products to use to prevent stretch marks are bio-oil and Cera-ve moisturizers.

However, please note that even if you do apply moisturizers and body oil, you may still get stretch marks, and that’s ok! The truth is, whether or not you get stretch marks is purely genetic. Sometimes, no matter what we do, we will just naturally get them. Don’t feel so bad about them! You’re beautiful, mama!

Essential Oils

From the very beginning of my pregnancy, I’ve kept essential oils on hand, just in case I’d need them. You might need these more in your first and last trimester, but just have one handy just in case. It will help during the first trimester when you are super sensitive to smell, and even in the third trimester when you might need that quick pick-me-up that aromatherapy can bring. My favourite one is the peppermint oil from Saje.

As a first time mama who was completely unprepared for pregnancy, the first thing I could really think of when I found out about my pregnancy was the impending labour to come. However, after watching countless Youtube positive birthing videos, I feel so much better and actually find myself looking forward to delivering my baby! Click here for my favourite channel to watch on Youtube for this topic: Built to Birth.
