Protective Mom’s Reason for Not Letting Her Toddler Stay at In-Laws’ Canal-Side House

A mother has raised concerns about her toddler being alone at her in-laws’ canal-side house. She has drawn a hard boundary with her husband that her daughter can’t be there without either of them while there is no fence between the garden and the canal. The mother, who we’ll call ‘Tara’ is seeking advice on whether she is being unreasonable in her decision.

Concerns About Canal-side House

Tara is concerned about her daughter being alone at her in-laws’ canal-side house. She has previously raised concerns about her daughter and the canal, as her daughter is curious about water and quick on her feet. Her mother-in-law initially suggested building a small fence, but her father-in-law dismissed the idea, saying there is no need.

Hard Boundary

“I’ve drawn a hard boundary with my husband that my daughter can’t be there without either me or him whilst there is no fence between the garden and the canal,” Tara wrote. “I just don’t trust them to be quick enough to react to a potential incident.”

Health Issues

Tara says she is worried because her in-laws have health issues that will prevent them from being quick on their feet. “Whilst they’re only mid-60s, they’re both quite old for their age. My FIL is classed as obese with a heart problem and is not particularly quick on his feet and my MIL is going through cancer treatment which has taken it’s toll on her strength and overall health bless her. This being the case, I just don’t trust them to be quick enough to react a potential incident.”

Trust Issues

Tara also has trust issues with her in-laws. She has spoken of past incidents where she was concerned about their in-laws taking care of her child and her instincts were proven right. “This situation, in particular, with the canal and the risk of drowning, isn’t something I want to be proven right in,” Tara said.

The mother is seeking advice on whether she is being unreasonable in her decision to not let her daughter be alone at her in-laws’ canal-side house. She acknowledges that she can be overprotective but feels that this is not something that she can ever be too vigilant about, especially with a toddler.
