first trimester pregnancy tips

You have all the signs and symptoms of first trimester pregnancy: You’ve missed your period, you can’t get up from bed because your whole body hurts, can’t keep food down. Or maybe you’re one of the lucky ones and don’t have any of the symptoms at all. All we know is that you’ve taken the pregnancy test, and it came out positive. Congratulations, you have now entered the first trimester of your pregnancy!

Now, you’ve probably somehow found your way onto this post, trying to look for first trimester pregnancy tips that will help you manage for the first three months. Well, to start off on a positive note, if you are just experiencing the symptoms now, you are probably already a month into your pregnancy, which means you only have to endure the first trimester woes for 2 more months! Congratulations, you’re a third of your way through the first trimester!

But, with no further ado, here are the top 9 tips to help you get through the rest of your first trimester pregnancy.

This post is all about first trimester pregnancy tips.

1. Take More than 1 Pregnancy Test

Ok this one seems pretty self-explanatory and I feel like most people do this anyway, but if you are one o those people that have been wanting to get pregnant for a long time, then you definitely want to double and triple check before you start celebrating. On the opposite end, if you were not ready to have a baby at this time, but found out you’re pregnant, you should still take another pregnancy test because you never know, maybe it was a false positive.

One of the things you should do, even when you just find out that you’re pregnant (and have taken a couple of tests to confirm) is let your doctor know, so they can recommend you to take a blood exam which will give you a way more accurate result as to whether you really are pregnant or not.

2. Keep Essential Oils Handy

Now, you may have other ideas on how you will use the essential oils, but I added this on here because your sense of smell will be annoyingly sensitive, and if you want to avoid puking your guts when you get a whiff of your coworker’s lunch, then I suggest keeping peppermint oil handy so you can inhale it anytime you get a whiff of any strong smells.

3. You’ll Hate the Taste, but Keep Saltine Crackers with You at All Times

I still have a few saltine crackers on hand because I bought so much from my first trimester of pregnancy. I hated the taste, and I hated how it’s the only thing I could keep down, but that’s the first trimester pregnancy for you. Keep this handy in case you get hungry but still feel nauseous that you can’t keep anything down. Another tip: keep a bunch by your bedside in case you get hungry at night.

4. Also Keep Ginger Tea and Ginger Candy Handy

Ginger tea is well known to help with first trimester nausea, and because of this you should always keep one in your cupboard for whenever you are feeling nauseous. Also keep ginger candy in your bag, so you can easily chew on it when you’re out and about.

5. Let Others Help You Out

At this point in your pregnancy, you probably haven’t told work yet that you are pregnant, simply because it’s still to early to announce anything. Or maybe because you are terrified at what they might say (spoiler: they’ll most likely be excited for you!). Honestly, it sucks that as ladies, we have to hide our pregnancies until it’s ‘safe’ to announce, especially since the first weeks when we are hiding our pregnancies are typically the worst of the worst.

On the same note, you have probably told your exciting news to family and close friends. If they offer to help you out, in terms of cooking food for you, or offering to get you whatever you might need to feel comfortable, graciously accept their help. Don’t feel guilty or feel like you have to refuse just because you feel shy!

6. Keep Drinking Water

You might feel sick just with the thought of drinking water, but honestly, force yourself to do it. You will feel better after, trust me. If you don’t want to drink bland, tasteless water, squeeze in some lemon or lime in your water to give it some flavour.

7. If You’re Craving it, Eat it

I know I don’t have to tell you twice to do this, but thought I’d add it on here anyway. If you are feeling guilty for craving taco bell or mcdonalds, and are trying your hardest not to succumb to your cravings, then I am here to tell you that you should let yourself eat what you crave! Look, with all the things going on in your body right now, such as nausea and not being able to keep food down, if the only thing that will make you happy is your guilty pleasure fast foods, then go for it! And don’t shame yourself for it!

8. Remember Which Foods Not to Eat

So I did give you the go signal to eat what you are craving for, but if you’re craving sushi or eggs benedict, I would err on the side of caution. The first trimester is such a fragile stage for the development of your baby, so avoid eating raw/uncooked foods during pregnancy but especially during the first trimester.

There are specific items that experts advice pregnant ladies to stay away from, most especially during the first trimester. The most common ones being:

  • Sushi (raw seafood)
  • Runny Eggs
  • Unpasteurized dairy products (milk and cheeses)
  • Cold Cuts (that means no charcuterie boards for now)

Yes, I know, what a sad time. But trust me, one day you will be able to eat all these again!

9. (TRY) to Keep Up with Your Normal Routine

Please please please try to keep up with your normal routine. I mean, if you are a hardcore gym rat, maybe you can ease off of that for a little bit. But having a steady routine despite feeling like crap day in and day out will be your saving grace. Time will go by faster and next thing you know, you’ll just wake up one day and you’ve hit your second trimester, and all first trimester pregnancy symptoms will seemingly disappear overnight.

Good luck!
