Childhood Myths Busted: 11 Things You Believed as a Kid That Aren’t True
As children, we often believe what we’re told without questioning it. But as we grow older, we begin to see the world in a different light and realize that some of our childhood beliefs were naive. In this article, we’ll hear from adults who share the things they believed as kids that they now know are false.
Adult Capabilities
One person shared that they used to believe that adults were smart and capable, but later realized that many adults don’t have it all figured out. “The worst day was realizing that the governments in charge are these same reckless adults and 90% don’t care about any of us,” they say.
Acne
Another person shared that they believed acne would stop after turning 18, only to realize that it can continue into adulthood.
Car Lights
One person shared that they believed having the light on in the car while driving would result in getting pulled over or ticketed. They said they believed “having the light on in the car when your driving or parents were driving means you would get pulled over or ticketed.”
Karma
Another person shared that they used to believe in karma, only to realize that it doesn’t always play out in real life. “What I’ve seen is that the exploiters and people with actual malice in their hearts live amazing lives and have lots of money,” they say.
Hard Work and Success
One person shared that they believed that working hard and being a good person would lead to a good life, only to realize that life can be unpredictable. “That if you do good things, work hard, and overall be a good person, life/the world will be good to you. I was a hopeful child,” they say.
Driving Abilities
Another person shared that they believed passing a driving test meant someone was a good driver, only to realize that’s not always the case. They said they thought “that people who pass their driving tests can drive,” turns out it’s not always true.
Quicksand
One person shared that they believed quicksand would be a major problem, only to realize it’s not as common as they thought.
University Degrees
Another person shared that they believed that getting a university degree would guarantee a well-paying job, only to realize that’s not always the case.
War
One person shared that they believed war was a thing of the past, only to realize that it’s still a reality in many parts of the world. “I genuinely believed war was an archaic thing from the history books and humans didn’t participate in it anymore,” they say.
Respect for Elders
Another person shared that they believed all elders should be treated with respect, only to realize that respect should be earned regardless of age. “Every elder or adult should be treated with respect just because they are older and know more in general. Growing up opened my eyes to that scam,” they say.
Feeling Grown Up
One person shared that they believed they would feel more grown up as they aged, only to realize that age doesn’t necessarily bring maturity. “I used to think I’d feel more grown up as I aged; I feel pretty much the same as I did as a teenager, I’m just older now,” they say.
